Claremore Economic Development and Northeast Tech Earn Highest Honors at IEDC Excellence in Economic Development Awards

September 26, 2024

The International Economic Development Council (IEDC) annually recognizes the world’s most innovative economic development programs, marketing materials, initiatives and leaders through its Excellence in Economic Development Awards. This year, Claremore Economic Development (CED), in partnership with Northeast Tech, City of Claremore and Rogers County Board of County Commissioners,  received the highest honors, earning a Gold Award for the Rogers County Technical Training Program.

Through the Rogers County Technical Training Program, over 150 scholarships have been awarded, totaling more than $275,750 to Rogers County citizens. Approximately 88% of recipients fall within the low-to-moderate income range, offering life-changing opportunities to area residents.

"The partnership between Claremore Economic Development and Northeast Tech has been pivotal in driving workforce development in Rogers County," said Meggie Froman-Knight, Executive Director of Claremore Economic Development. "Through the Rogers County Technical Training Program, we’ve empowered residents with the skills necessary to thrive in an ever-changing job market. This initiative has not only opened doors to meaningful careers but has also strengthened the local workforce, ensuring businesses have access to a well-trained, capable talent pool. We are proud to be part of this impactful collaboration and remain dedicated to fostering economic growth through education and workforce development."

First launched in January 2023, the Rogers County Technical Training Program has enjoyed tremendous success and community interest. Due to the high demand for training, the Oklahoma Department of Commerce awarded an additional $110,000 in June 2024 to fund a second cycle of scholarships. The program was additionally expanded to offer a wider variety of training options.

The scholarship enabled students aged 16 and older to complete tuition-free programs at Northeast Tech, preparing them for high-demand career opportunities in the region, with 63 percent of students participating in healthcare courses and 36 percent completing manufacturing programs.  Priority was given to Rogers County residents who met HUD’s low-to-moderate income guidelines and were impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, ensuring that the initiative serves as a lifeline for individuals reentering the workforce and being retained in the community’s labor pool.

"At Northeast Tech, we continuously seek opportunities to expand educational access and impact within our community,” Sara Edwards, Northeast Tech Adult Ed Director. "Partnering with Claremore Economic Development on the Rogers County Technical Training Program has been a privilege, as it not only transforms the lives of local residents but also strengthens the workforce that drives our region’s economic vitality. This initiative is creating lasting, generational change, providing individuals with the skills they need for success while ensuring our business community has access to a highly qualified talent pool. We look forward to future partnership opportunities and remain dedicated to preparing the next generation of workforce leaders who will sustain and grow our local economy."

The Excellence in Economic Development Awards program includes 26 categories that highlight impactful programs, projects and people in the economic development field. The winning projects and organizations were selected by an esteemed panel of judges and reflect the ingenuity and dedication required to drive transformative economic growth in communities across the globe.

“This year’s winners truly embody the spirit of innovation and excellence in economic development,” said Nathan Ohle, IEDC’s president and CEO. “Their outstanding efforts have not only enhanced their own communities but serve as a benchmark for impactful and sustainable economic development worldwide.”
